Formula and worked example

Volume = closing reading − opening reading

For a litre meter with 2 decimal places: 12,845.92 − 12,345.67 = 500.25 litres. For a 5 whole-digit counter wrapping once: 100,000 − 99,990 + 15 = 25 litres.

How to use the worksheet

  1. Record the station, period, nozzle, fuel grade and supplying tank on the sheet.
  2. Copy both readings and check the unit, decimal places and digits before the decimal point.
  3. If the closing reading is lower, check for a typing error or meter replacement first. Confirm a rollover only with evidence.
  4. Keep the readings and have exceptions approved before reconciling sales and receipts.

The original FuelOps worksheet is free to download, print and adapt for your internal business use. Open the HTML file in a browser and choose Print or Save as PDF. It is a blank manual record, not a spreadsheet with formulas.

Scope and limits

Only one evidenced rollover with a lower closing reading is supported. Replacements, manual resets and multiple wraps require separate segments. US liquid and imperial gallons are distinct units. Results are rounded to 4 decimal places in litres, without temperature compensation or tax calculations.

Practical questions

Should I use electronic or mechanical readings?

Use two readings from the same totalizer in the same unit. Do not mix an amount counter, a volume counter and an individual transaction display.

How do I calculate revenue?

Volume multiplied by unit price gives an indicative sales value. Split periods when prices change. Actual receipts also depend on credit, refunds and payment methods.

The next step

Keep the workflow in FuelOps

FuelOps snapshots the meter configuration and supplying tank for each shift, calculates nozzle volumes and supports approval of corrections.
